Abstract

Jami 'al-Tirmidhi is a comprehensive and a very useful book of hadith in which traditions, wisdom/rationale and jurisprudence of hadith have been collated. Besides this, it has many merits/virtues, and it is one of the important books of hadith. Due to its many merits, some scholars have given it third highest place among the books of Hadith. Many people have written commentaries on Sunan Tirmidhi.  One of these commentaries is Sharh Al-Kawakib Al-Durri which is a textbook on Jamia Tirmidhi by Maulana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi compiled by Muhammad Ismail Kandhalvi. This book, despite being brief, is considered to be one of the comprehensive commentaries on hadith.

Every Muhadith (narrator of hadith) has his own method of interpreting/explaining the ahaadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and through his very own method he interprets/explains different ahaadith. This interpretation/explanation is done in many ways, one of which is to do a lexical study of the words and their grammar and syntactics. Apart from grammar and syntactics, another important thing to consider is the meaning of the words. The individual and literal meaning of some words can be very clear, But together with other words, their meaning and significance changes according to the context. Commentators/narrators of hadith also explain the meanings of such words.

In addition to this, the ahadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) contain some unique and difficult words. Such require serious consultation and reference to research made in this regard, in order to determine their meaning. Maulana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi's commentary is characterized by the fact that Maulana has placed high regard for the fundamental principles. The readers of Al-Kawakib al-Durri can observe it well.
