Islam is the religion based on the laws of nature. It asks its followers to practice moderation not only in the state of peace but in the state of war as well. There are numerous Quranic injunctions and the sayings of the Prophet that testify this. It was a result of this very pattern of conduct and sayings of the Prophet that later on his caliphs too retained the same policy. They kept giving instructions to their troops to take care of the opponents in war and that unnecessary killings should be avoided. Amongst the caliphs especially the first two righteous caliphs i.e. Syedna Abu Bakar(RA) and Syedna Umer (RA) did not deem verbal instructions in this regard enough. Instead they dispatched letters/epistles stating the principles of Sharia during war and reminded them of the same.
There are many organizations who are working in this regard in our contemporary age. They are making efforts to implement the ethics of war in their true spirit. In this article an attempt is being made to extract these ethical principles from the epistles of Syedna Abu Bakar(RA) and Syedna Umar (RA) and then draw a comparative analysis of International Humanitarian Law with it.
